S-Express Malaysia

Karya-karya film pendekMalaysia dalam program pertukaran film pendek Asia Tenggara ini dipilih dengan pertimbangan sebagai karya-karya yang cukup representatif dari keberadaan film pendek di negara yang terlibat pada tahun 2005.

S-Express diprakarsai oleh Yuni Hadi (Substation, Singapore), Amir Muhammad (Malaysian Shorts), dan Chalida Uabumrungjit (Thai Film Foundation) pada tahun 2002 dan sejak tahun 2004 Minikino ikut serta untuk memprogram bagian film pendek Indonesia. Pada tahun 2005, S-Express mengalami penambahan program, yaitu dari Filipina dan dari Cina.


28 Hours Later
Ng Ken Kin, Malaysia 2005, Digital Video, 14 minutes
Low-budget Malaysian DV meets big-budget British DV in this cheeky intertextual ride. A party-goer wakes up after a night of disco fun, only to find himself alone. Should he blame it on the boogie?

Ng Ken Kin is a freelance director and editor who started making his own shorts 2 years ago.


Bernafas Dalam Lumpur (Breathing In Mud)
James Lee, Malaysia 2005, Digital Video, 18 minutes
Azman a photographer, likes the strong and quiet. But he knows they can't be together. Lina's heart is still with Meor who has been in prison these last five years. Meor's release is set to change the directions of all their lives. Will Meor's meeting with his old partner in crime, Din resolve their unspoken tension?

James Lee's fourth feature "The Beautiful Washing Machine" has been to over 2 dozen film festivals and won Best ASEAN Feature at the 2005 Bangkok International Film Festival. "Bernafas Dalam Lumpur" is his 12th short and the first in Malay.


A Tree In Tanjung Malim
Tan Chui Mui, Malaysia 2004, Digital Video, 24 minutes
A young woman who has not yet tasted the world has a nocturnal conversation with a man who already seems weary of the world.

Kuantan-born Tan Chui Mui is the most prolific female independent filmmaker in Malaysia. She is active as writer, director, producer and most recently actress. She is currently working on a few more shorts and a feature. This short won 2nd prize at Oberhausen Short Film Festival 2005.
